BRITAIN SENT 7.7 MILLION GAMBLING URLS TO THE SHREDDER. THE BLACK MARKET BARELY BLINKED.

UKGC referred 7.68 million URLs to search engines while a separate study found nearly 20 illegal-site visits per 100 legal-site visits. Two big numbers, two different realities.

THE SHREDDER IS BUSY. WHAT ABOUT THE CASINOS?

Imagine Britain's gambling regulator standing beside an industrial shredder. Link after link goes in. 7,677,211 URLs. That's how many the Gambling Commission referred to search engines in July–September 2026. Its activity figures also list 3,019,291 URLs removed from search results during the quarter. Impressive. Just remember: a URL isn't a casino company. And referring a link for removal isn't the same as getting it removed.

THE BLACK MARKET DOESN'T READ PRESS RELEASES.

On November 6, the British Horseracing Authority highlighted another report. It measured visits across 74 legal and 227 illegal betting websites during the first seven months of 2026. The result: 19.4 visits to illegal sites for every 100 visits to legal ones. That's not 19.4% of the entire UK market, or a share of betting revenue. It's a traffic ratio within a selected sample. Still, it's a number worth staring at.

BETDILLA COCKTAIL: THE OLIVE

TO BE FAIR, THE REGULATOR ISN'T SITTING STILL.

UKGC has evidence that some interventions work. In its monitoring, 77% of affected sites with enough data saw estimated traffic decline. Across those measurable sites, estimated traffic fell by about 18%. So the regulator isn't just feeding paper to a machine. But shutting down URLs and shutting down demand for illegal gambling are two very different achievements.

THE NUMBERS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

7.7 million URLs do not mean 7.7 million operators. 19.4 visits do not mean 19.4% of UK gambling GGR. And a visit is not a unique player. UKGC's September dashboard also listed 586 accessible illegal sites and found that 4% of results for monitored generic Google gambling searches led to identified illegal sites. Different measures. Different samples. One very tempting opportunity to misread the scoreboard.

AFFILIATES, THIS ONE'S ABOUT YOU TOO.

While regulators count links, affiliates live and die by search results. We previously covered Google opening premium gambling advertising to eligible operators while excluding affiliates and operators joining forces against unlicensed casinos. But trust isn't built with a delete button alone. Remember Curaçao's licensing portal security story: sometimes even the licensing machinery needs scrutiny.

BETDILLA VERDICT.

Britain keeps throwing millions of links into the shredder. The black market keeps looking for customers. That doesn't make enforcement pointless. It makes a URL counter a poor substitute for measuring consumer protection. A beautiful enforcement report can be printed in a day. Ending demand for illegal betting is another story.
