The Premier League banned gambling sponsors from the front of football shirts. Apparently, nobody told the sleeves. University of Bristol researchers found that betting branding on sleeves and training kits jumped 362.7% versus the previous three-year average. Across the 2026/27 opening weekend, they logged 15,571 gambling messages across match coverage, broadcast media and social platforms.

Clean chests. Very busy sleeves.

The voluntary Premier League front-of-shirt ban, agreed in 2023, took effect for the 2026/27 season. Shirt-front branding almost vanished: the nine recorded appearances came from archive footage. Sleeve and training-kit appearances, however, increased from an average of roughly 122 to 563. That is a rise in counted exposures, not necessarily sponsorship revenue or the number of deals.

15,571 messages. Here's what was counted.

The research covered seven UK live broadcasts from the opening weekend, Sky Sports News, talkSPORT and social content from leading gambling brands. The total was 41.57% higher than in 2023, although lower than in 2024 and 2025. The researchers count repeated appearances of logos, even in the same shot, so the figure is not a count of unique adverts, viewers or clicks.

Pitchside boards: the actual MVP.

Pitchside electronic and static boards accounted for 72.06% of gambling messages during live match broadcasts. Once sponsorship lead-ins were excluded, overall live-match messages were down just 10.5% compared with the 2023–2025 average. The shirt-front restriction clearly cleaned up shirt fronts; it did not remove betting branding from football broadcasts.

And what about younger audiences?.

The study estimated 16.6 million paid-social ad impressions among 18- to 24-year-olds despite the industry's under-25 targeting restrictions. Impressions are not unique people or website visits, but the estimate adds to demands for tighter oversight.

A marketing loophole or a policy limit?.

Researchers and campaigners argue that voluntary restrictions do not sufficiently reduce gambling exposure. Marketers will see a familiar dynamic: block one placement and spend shifts to another. Still, calling the ban entirely ineffective would miss the fact that shirt-front logos largely disappeared and total messages remained below their 2024 and 2025 peaks.

BETDILLA EDITORIAL TAKE.

Banning betting logos from players' chests, then discovering they have arms, is one way to reinvent sponsorship strategy. But let's be precise: 362.7% is growth in one advertising placement, not the entire gambling market. Restrict a surface and media budgets do not magically vanish. They find another surface.
